Combating comment spam

The quantity of comment spam has been steadily increasing. I'm now disallowing anonymous comments; we'll see if that changes things appreciably.

I've been having the same problem for months on my website. Captchas don't seem to work at all, and even with authentication via email confirmation, the spammers manage to eventually post their cr*p there. Comment moderation is enabled of course. All of this is effective only to a certain extent and is a real pain in the *rse for legit users. Hope this doesn't stop legit users from posting here.

I think the problem is that spammers finally realized using proper sentences will fool spam filters much better than clumping all known medication names together. This seems to have happened late last year or so.

The spam that gets through Akismet usually is a very generic (negative or positive) comment about a post. Luckily, the spam comment is usually exactly the same every time so it's easy to spot. I guess the spammers didn't learn everything about common sense at one go...

"Captchas don't seem to work at all".

Maybe the efforts of the spammers have a positive impact in the advancement of OCR technology? ;)
